Who better to open new sports facilities at his old school than Olympic gold medallist Allan Wells?

FORMER Olympic gold medallist Allan Wells made a nostalgic trip back to his old school, Liberton High.

And it was for a good reason as the sprint champion of the Moscow Olympic Games of 1980 officially opened the school's new sports facilities.

Allan is pictured admiring Dave Johnson as he shows off his basketball skills.

The super sprinter officially opened Liberton High's new £2.1 million games hall which can be used by local community and sports groups outside school hours.

It was paid for by the Big Lottery Fund and can be used for a wide variety of sports including badminton, basketball, volleyball and indoor hockey.

Allan attended the school between 1964 and 1968 before going on to achieve Olympic glory in Moscow in 1980.

Head teacher, Donald Macdonald, was delighted to welcome Allan back to the school and said: "Liberton High School has a proud tradition in a range of sports.

"I'm confident that this new state-of-the-art facility will encourage sport in the school and hope it won't be long before we see other Liberton High School students competing for sporting honours at the highest levels."
