Keep Edinburgh Clean campaign recognises excellence in city businesses

Five city businesses have recently received the coveted gold award for their part in the Keep Edinburgh Clean campaign.

These awards recognise excellence on the part of those organisations for making a significant positive impact on their environment.

  • Marriott Hotel
  • The Radisson SAS Hotel
  • Redhall Walled Garden
  • Edinburgh Airport
  • Hilary’s Bazaar
  • Columcille Centre

Participation involves recycling materials, carrying out regular clean ups and encouraging biodiversity on or near their premises.

Improving the visual appearance of a business can also contribute towards an award.

The latest recipients of the gold award are:

  • Edinburgh Airport, which ensures that staff have an environment element to their induction training and has a dedicated
  • team to carry out regular clean ups of the airport area
  • Edinburgh Marriott Hotel, Glasgow Road, which is active in the Marriott International Green Globe environmental programme
  • Redhall Walled Garden, Lanark Road, which includes allotments, a nursery and learning centre, providing opportunities for people with mental health difficulties to develop their green fingers
  • the Columcille Centre, Newbattle Terrace, a charity that works with people with learning difficulties
  • Hilary’s Bazaar, George IV Bridge, a retail shop.

Entry to the scheme is free and there are advantages to joining, such as making savings by managing waste more successfully.

Keeping it clean

The efforts of 178 city businesses that are members of the Keep Edinburgh Clean Awards were recognised at a recent awards ceremony.

The awards recognise the work that city businesses and other organisations carry out to improve their environmental performance and promote environmental action to both customers and suppliers.

There were three overall categories awarded at the ceremony.

These were:

  • waste minimisation award, won by The Royal Bank of Scotland’s Gogarburn site, which has a number of impressive waste-minimising policies
  • biodiversity award won by the British Geological Survey for the many wildlife-friendly features around their premises
  • the top award of Best Business was won by the Edinburgh International Conference Centre (EICC), where a green team helps build sustainability into every aspect of their operations. The EICC has been very successfully cutting down on waste and improving efficiency, and in doing so has reaped the rewards by making significant savings.
