Free service to older people to help prevent accidents in the home

Home Safety Check Service is a brand new service that has been launched to help prevent accidents in the homes of people over 60.

The free service is operated jointly by the Council and Care and Repair Handypersons Service, with funding from the Edinburgh Community Safety Partnership.

A Homecheck Inspector will visit homes, check for visual hazards and advise on ways to reduce or eliminate potential problems such as dangerous floor coverings, overloaded power points, faulty electric light switches or sockets, poor ventilation, badly positioned furniture, unsafe storage of medicines and uneven steps or pathways.

Older people are more at risk of having an accident.

One in seven of those attending hospital following a home accident is over 65 years old.

These accidents happen for a variety of reasons including failing or impaired health, arthritis, failing eyesight, confusion due to medication and, most commonly, habitual unsafe practice.

To book a Home Safety Check call 0131 469 5192 or 0131 220 7630.
