Our Park Rangers and Countryside Rangers care for our green spaces to ensure they are welcoming and safe

DID YOU know that Edinburgh has 30 park rangers caring for your parks and play areas?

Park Ranger Service staff care for our green spaces to ensure they are welcoming and safe.

As well as park rangers, we have countryside rangers, responsible for the conservation of the city’s wildlife and natural resources. They manage the Pentlands Hills Regional Park, Hermitage of the Braid and Cammo Estate.

Day-to-day, park rangers battle against litter, dog-related problems, vandalism and antisocial behaviour.

They also hold a greater educational role in which they interpret Edinburgh’s green areas to residents and visitors.

The park rangers operate a dawn to dusk service. The city’s seven premier parks – Princes Street Gardens, Calton Hill, the Meadows, Saughton, Leith Links, Bruntsfield Links and Inverleith Park – are staffed on a permanent basis. All other community parks and play areas are monitored in vans, on foot or on bicycle.

Rangers on bikes have had a warm welcome in those areas of the city where a speedy response is needed, ie: Balerno, the Meadows, Leith, Portobello, South Queensferry and Kirkliston.

Another innovation is the ‘Community Walk’ in which dedicated rangers on foot look after clusters of open spaces, ie: Leith, Gorgie, Trinity, Stockbridge and Portobello.
