GREAT MOOVE

CowParade Edinburgh 2006 kicked off on 15 May much to the delight of locals and tourists alike.

More than 90 cows are dotted all around the city, coming in all kinds of shapes and patterns. It is the largest ever art exhibition to take place in the city.

Local artists and community schools have been involved in the design of the cows.

When the cows are finally packed up at the end of the parade that won’t be the last we will see of some of them as they will be auctioned in September to raise money for OneCity Trust and VETAID.

  • The CowParade will run until 23 July. Maps of cow locations are available at tourist information centres, Jenners, libraries and Edinburgh leisure centres. Or visit: www.cowparade-edinburgh.co.uk

The cow, which represents the Keep Edinburgh Clean Campaign, has been altered to become a recycling receptacle for cans.

The unusual design includes holes in the top and sides for inserting the cans, which will be collected by the Council and recycled via Changeworks, formerly LEEP.

Any proceeds from the cans will be donated to the nominated CowParade charities, One City Trust and VETAID.

Situated in the east side of Princes Street Gardens, the Can Can cow has been designed with a Moulin Rouge theme. The bright and colourful design includes bright pink shoes, a feather headdress and evening gloves.

The official launch of the cow took place in May with the support of pupils from Abbeyhill Primary School.

The pupils have managed to recycle 160kgs of cans in the school year, which is equivalent to over 10,000 individual cans.

The children have been recycling the cans with Changeworks and were on hand at the launch to help educate visitors to the CowParade on the importance of reducing, reusing and recycling litter.
