An express service straight into town
After two years of committee scrutiny, trams have now received the final go-ahead from the Scottish Parliament.
The Tram committees heard from both supporters and opponents. It sifted through thousands of pages of technical information, and judged the scheme would bring many important benefits to Edinburgh.

We’d like to say a big thank you to all the individuals and organisations that took part in the consultation process and made their views known.
| What’s SO great about trams? • Trams let more people travel without their cars, reducing congestion. • Trams are quick, clean and comfortable. • Trams are easily used by people with disabilities and parents with prams. • Trams improve the image of a city. Think about the last city you went to that had trams from the airport – what impression did you get? • Trams improve the image of a city, attracting investment which leads to more jobs and opportunities. |
What will trams mean to you? Well, for a start, they could let you have a longer lie-in on a Monday morning because they’ll be a quick and easy way to get into town.
They’ll work just as well to nip up to Ocean Terminal, to the waterfront, or out to the Gyle or the airport.
Because trams will have some dedicated routes and priority over other vehicles at certain points, there will be no traffic to deal with.
Right now, as far as traffic congestion is concerned, Edinburgh is a victim of its own success.
Our economy and population has and still is growing rapidly.
As a result, car ownership has almost doubled in the past 25 years.
In response, we must provide fast, comfortable public transport options to tempt us out of our cars, particularly for our daily commute.

Trams are fast – with fewer stops than buses and with everyone boarding swiftly.
They move quickly along major routes which, without trams, would likely become more and more gridlocked.
