City makes recycling history

THE city of Edinburgh is famous worldwide for its history. Now – because of its residents – another slice of history has been made!

Our city is now a cleaner, greener place – and you can all take a bow.

Recycling is at an all-time high, hitting more than 29 per cent in June!

And what all you eco-minded residents have been doing can be measured by the tonne – thousands of them! Between January and June this year you have recycled:

  • 6,000-plus tonnes of cans, cardboard and glass
  • 11,000-plus tonnes of garden waste
  • 8,000-plus tonnes of paper.

Paper recycling banks are now at more than 60 schools in the city, helping our future generations get in on the action.

Our average recycling rate, since April, is 27 per cent which means we’re on schedule to contribute to the national target of 25 per cent recycling by the end of this year.

To continue this recycling success, residents are reminded to please ensure all cans, cartons and bottles are completely clean before recycling.

Dirt and waste cause all sorts of problems for the recycling processes and can lead to the recycling factory rejecting the whole load, so it can end up in landfill.

To make more space in the packaging recycling banks, please crush containers and flatten cardboard before putting them in. This helps to make more space in the bank, so there is room for even more recycling!
