Just some of the events and festivities you can expect to see this coming Christmas in the city

Although it’s hard to believe, the festive season is just around the corner and Edinburgh is gearing up to sparkle again.

The magic of the season will once more bring the city to life when the lights are switched on, the Edinburgh Wheel and the Carousel start to turn and the streets are transformed into a glittering landscape.

This year’s programme is packed with fun for all ages, whether it’s joining in the special Christmas events, shows, music and sports; shopping in the Traditional German Christmas Market, French or Scottish or Farmers’ Markets or just soaking up the city’s atmosphere.

Watch out for the Great Scottish Santa Run, open to all ages, when the city will be aiming to beat last year’s record of 1,500 Santa-clad runners taking part in a 1.5 km circuit of Princes Street Gardens in aid of the charity When You Wish Upon a Star, caring for children with terminal illnesses.

Full details of this and everything else going on and how you can join in can be found on our website.

Then just when you think it’s all over, the city turns itself round again for the ultimate in Hogmanay celebrations, four days of fun and festivities with something for everyone from the very young to the young at heart.

It will all kick off with the stunning Torchlight Procession on 29 December from St Giles Cathedral to Calton Hill when the route will be ablaze with thousands of torches.

You can join the parade for free but monies raised from the sale of torches are donated to the Radio Forth Help A Child Appeal and One City Trust.

On the Night Afore, George Street comes alive in a carnival of colour for the Night Afore International extravaganza of street theatre, music and dance.

On Hogmanay itself, Princes Street is the place to be whether for The Royal Bank Street Party, the Ceilidh in the Gardens or the Concert in the Gardens.

Tickets for all events will be available from 7 October.

Full programmes for all the events throughout the winter will be available from mid-October at various locations throughout the city. We look forward to seeing you!
