Awards for the green fingered from Keep Edinburgh Growing

Now in its third year, the popular Keep Edinburgh Growing competition is a major feature of the Edinburgh gardening calendar.

Medals for the best gardens and allotments this year tally 33 gold, 47 silver gilt, 30 silver and 31 bronze. Here’s just a couple of examples of green fingered groups who won this year:

Occupational Therapy Garden
The Occupational Therapy garden at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital is packed with fruit trees, rose beds, dahlias … and even conducts research on thistles. There’s lots of involvement from residential and day patients with mental health problems as they use computers to help organise the planting rotas, as well as do woodwork and gardening. All this helps increase patients’ confidence and helps them back into supported employment. This work was recognised in a special achievement award this year.

Sighthill Primary School
Teachers and pupils developed an empty courtyard in the middle of the school into a thriving wildlife garden and won the schools category. The garden is now a teaching tool and the pupils love their green oasis.
