Capital schemes to make Edinburgh more active...
Football, hockey, rugby and cricket are just some of the sports that can be played at Edinburgh’s new £10 million sports complex.
Playing fields so ripe for renewal Work has started on upgrading the playing fields at Colinton Mains Park. The work is part of the Council’s pledge to make Edinburgh Europe’s most active city by 2020. A new drainage system is being installed and the diggers have moved in to create level pitches by shifting hundreds of tonnes of top soil. Alternative venues have been found for the local football teams during the improvements and upgrading works. However, they are expected to return to the much-improved facility for the start of the 2007/08 season in August. Alongside the levelling of the pitches, the improvements will also include the creation of 800 metres of new footpaths and seating, relocation of the teenage shelter and tree and bulb planting. The £168,000 investment is set to provide a better environment for everyone who uses and enjoys the park. |
Meggetland Sports Complex was officially opened last month by the recently appointed manager of Scotland’s national football team, Alex McLeish, and is already becoming a popular and well-used sports facility by local schools and community groups.

The complex has three rugby pitches, two football pitches, four soccer seven pitches, a cricket square and an all-weather pitch.
As two of the rugby pitches, one football pitch and the all-weather pitch have floodlighting they can be used up to 9.30pm at evenings as well as weekends throughout the year.
In addition to the outdoor pitches, the complex has state-of-the-art changing facilities and rooms for hire for meetings and events by schools and community groups.
Meggetland Sports Complex replaces the former Meggetland Playing Fields, and a range of schools, community clubs and youth sport development groups are all making the most of it.
