Oxgangs is being regenerated into an area of affordable quaility homes for residents
A new development in Oxgangs is a great example of the quality of new affordable rented homes in Edinburgh.
In November 2006, the final two of three 1960s multi-storey blocks in Oxgangs were demolished in a spectacular scene which marked a new beginning for social housing in the area.
Caerketton and Allermuir Courts were knocked down to make way for the second phase of new social housing for rent, which will be built by Dunedin Canmore Housing Association.

The Council, Dunedin Canmore and local residents have worked together to make regeneration plans for the area a reality.
The area is now being transformed with 243 affordable new homes, a small number of shops and workspace units.
The first phase of the development is being completed in stages – with 31 houses and 60 flats. The first tenants moved in during January.
The new housing has been created with residents in mind.
The Oxgangs High Rise Steering Group, made up of mainly former residents of the multi-storey blocks and residents of the surrounding area, were involved in drawing-up the designs of the development.

These include the following features:
- All properties have been designed to make the best use of natural light, have been fitted with energy efficient gas central heating and combi boilers, and are insulated and double glazed to high standards.
- The homes include a ‘Passivent’, which creates a healthy environment through natural and energy efficient ventilation.
- All 31 houses have front and back gardens, a downstairs toilet, utility room and private parking.
- Residential streets have a pedestrianised feel so that they can be used by local people and not just traffic. ‘Homezones’ have traffic calming measures and are designed to minimise high vehicle use on particular streets.
The Oxgangs development is just the beginning for high quality affordable housing for rent in the city.
Over the next few years, the Council will continue to work with partners to increase the supply of affordable housing in the city so that Edinburgh residents will have access to modern and affordable accommodation for years to come.
