General traffic diversions and parking changes in city centre
If you have been in Edinburgh city centre recently, you will have noticed that the tram works are well under way.
Throughout the start of 2008, work has been ongoing throughout the city centre to make it possible for the main utility diversions to be carried out.
All utilities must be diverted from underneath the tram route before the tram tracks can be laid.
Shandwick Place, from Manor Place to the Lothian Road junction, has been closed to all buses and traffic but remains open for residents and pedestrians to access all shops and businesses.
Other major work areas • Leith Walk – Jameson Place to Brunswick Street • Leith Walk – Balfour Street to Foot of the Walk • York Place • St Andrew Square These works are all utility diversions. All these streets will remain open, but local traffic management schemes may be put in place, such as lane closures. Did you know? There were 482 million bus passengers in Scotland in 2006. [IMG2] |
The reason for the complete closure of the street is to allow the contractors, Alfred McAlpine, to access and realign all the under-road utilities in this area.
As a result of the closure, temporary traffic measures have been put in place. These are highlighted here and in the map above...
- During the closure of Shandwick Place, traffic will be diverted via Manor Place or Morrison Street and the Western Approach Road.
- The new routes for drivers and buses are shown on the map and clear signage will be posted throughout the works.
- Pedestrians will still have normal access to Shandwick Place, Stafford Street and William Street throughout the works.
- Taxis will be able to follow the bus diversion.
