Visitors can browse a major new photography exhibition at the City Art Centre

Crowds have been flocking to the City Art Centre’s hit spring exhibition, Ansel Adams: Celebration of Genius.

The exhibition is the most comprehensive overview of Ansel Adams’ work ever exhibited in the UK and includes 150 original prints, spanning the 1920s to the 1960s. The subjects range from his most famous images of the American West to portraits, still lifes and abstract photo studies.

Ansel Adams is among the few photographers in history whose name and work enjoy worldwide recognition and his photographs have become as iconic as the landscapes he helped to preserve.

While many come to know his work through widely published books, postcards, posters and calendars, relatively few have actually seen his lushly printed original images.

Thousands of visitors have already been to the exhibition, with visitor numbers far outstripping expectations. The City Art Centre will reopen on Sundays from 23 March, making it easier to catch the exhibition before it ends on 20 April.

The City Art Centre’s new weekday season ticket is proving popular with visitors who don’t have time to get round the exhibition in one visit. The ticket has gone down particularly well with office workers in the city centre dropping in at lunchtimes. The ticket (£4, £2.50 concession) is the same price as a single admission but can be used for repeat visits all day Monday-Friday.
The City Art Centre, Market Street, is open from Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm, Sundays (from 23 March) 12-5pm. Ansel Adams: Celebration of Genius runs until 20 April.
