How modern trams differ from their Victorian predecessors

New trams built in Britain and Europe over the past 20 years are very different from the Victorian systems that once ran in many British cities, including Edinburgh.

Modern, fast and quiet networks in Nottingham, Manchester and Croydon have now replaced older systems.

Further afield, some 11 French cities have either upgraded or developed new light rail systems since 1985. Germany now has 50 networks, while even a small country like the Netherlands boasts five.

Dublin’s tram system (Luas), above, has also gone from strength to strength since its completion in 2004.

The network now has two lines, with several extensions and new lines at the planning stage. The Luas system carried some 29 million passengers last year.

Trams are popular worldwide because they reduce congestion, are safe and accessible to all and attract new businesses and jobs.
