Sport and culture – your future

The Council, working with our partners, is leading on a new project called Access to Sport and Culture (ASC) Edinburgh.

The key aim of this initiative is to find new ways of breaking down the barriers that stop people from taking part in sport and arts activities.

More than 19,000 people contributed to an earlier part of the consultation and early indications show that more than two-thirds of respondents took part in some form of sport or physical activity in the previous four weeks, with 88 per cent having participated in arts or cultural events in the previous six months.

These statistics are very encouraging, but we want to achieve more.

ASC Edinburgh is funded by the Scottish Government and partners the Council, Capital City Partnership, Edinburgh Partnership, Scottish Arts Council and Youngedinburgh.

Our city’s Cultural Partnership and Sport and Physical Recreation Partnership are also vital to this work, linking consultation to existing community planning networks.

Most recently, the Edinburgh Partnership made a huge contribution with an extremely successful event held on 2 October, which included the National Health Service, Squash Scotland, Drake Music Scotland, Lothian Disability Sport and North Edinburgh Arts.

This work will deliver a final statement of intent, or pledge, and a set of delivery recommendations in December 2008.
