Self service

In brief

Four libraries across the city introduced self-service points over the summer. These electronic kiosks allow users to check out and return books by themselves.

The aim of the system is to free up staff to help out more with other activities such as story times for younger users, general queries and the demand for internet access.

Libraries using the new system are Newington, Stockbridge, McDonald Road and Blackhall. There are also plans to extend the system to Morningside and, eventually, other libraries across the city.

Martin Hinds, service development manager for Libraries and Information Services, is really pleased with the success of the system. “Staff have taken to the new system really positively. Their working day can be so much more flexible now that they don’t have to carry out so many routine tasks.”
