Green all the year round

Edinburgh homes receiving the garden waste recycling service are benefiting from year-round collections which began in November.

Garden waste has previously only been collected for nine months of the year, but residents using brown bins will now be able to create less landfill and help reduce the amount of gases which harm the environment all year round.

Already in 2008, city gardeners have collected nearly 12,000 tonnes of garden waste for recycling.

An additional 10,000 homes are being added to the service meaning that 120,000 households are now very green gardeners.

Putting garden waste in the brown bins has a positive impact on the environment, and it helps to make our city look great. Compost made from garden waste is used to make sure Edinburgh’s parks and public gardens are beautiful throughout the year.

With the extended service, the next 12 months look set to be another green year for Edinburgh’s gardeners.
