On track for Trams
The tram network will really begin to take shape as we prepare roads for tracks to be laid.
The first phase of the tram works has undoubtedly meant digging a lot of holes,as you will have noticed!
We’ve been concentrating on moving and upgrading more than 25km of utility pipes and cables that run beneath pavements, roads and our feet so that they are out of the way of the tram track. Many needed to be replaced anyway.
Representatives from tie and the business community recently took part in a study visit to Berlin to find out what this new phase of work entails and to observe the current tram construction taking place in the German city.
Siemens is presently building an extension to the Berlin tram network and the company is also part of the Bilfinger Berger Siemens consortium responsible for the infrastructure.
“It is clear from Berlin that Siemens invests strongly in good planning, project management and ensuring the right resources are in place to deliver successfully on the streets of Berlin,” said Colin McLauchlan, HR & corporate affairs director for tie.
“I am confident that they will apply their 50 years of experience in building tram networks in capital cities like Berlin to Edinburgh.”
Rob Winter, spokesperson for the Princes Street Association, was also on the visit.
He said: “It’s important the business and retail community knows what it going on, so we know what to expect and can reassure our customers.
“The next phase certainly does not seem as traumatic as the previous utility works. It’s not as heavy duty and seems a lot more minimal. And, with this work, you actually see something solid and physical at the end!
“We met with Siemens in Berlin, who seemed very professional, knowledgeable and scientific in their approach.
“They understood the issues – from what kind of insulation you need on tracks to minimise vibration and noise to what kinds of finishes are needed – such as stone or tarmac – to ensure we get a quality end product.”
Rob had a final Christmas message to shoppers: “Princes Street is quite a magical place at Christmas. With the view to the Castle and the Winter Wonderland, it really is photogenic and the full Christmas experience.
“The shops you know and love are open as usual and the tram works will be suspended over December to ensure the very best shopping environment.
“Why go anywhere else?”
