Update on parking zones

For two years, we have extended the area of Edinburgh’s controlled parking zone.

This was the first major expansion of the scheme since its introduction 30 years ago.

With commuters no longer able to park all day within the new zones, many residents have told us that they can now park near to their homes for the first time in years. Unfortunately, some of the commuter parking has moved out to other areas and we have had requests from some residents and councillors to investigate this problem.

Where are we consulting?

Consultations are being carried out in nine areas in 2008 and early 2009 about the recent extended zones to determine the need for and level of support for further controls.

These include the area to the south of zone S1; South Morningside (south of zone S2); the area east of Easter Road; the Warriston area; the area to the north of Zones N2 and N3; the Craigleith /Blinkbonny areas; Prestonfield; and the Shandon/Meggetland areas.

South of zone S1

We are bringing forward proposals to control the area. Two public meetings were held in October giving those affected the opportunity to discuss proposals. The outcome of the statutory consultation will be reported to the Council during February 2009. If parking controls are introduced, these could be in place by 2010.

South of zone S2

Residents were more than two to one against the proposed parking controls. However, support was greater in the area to the east of Comiston Road and we have been asked to reconsider proposals for that area.

We will monitor the area and bring forward proposals to introduce waiting restrictions at junctions where this is needed for safety.

Easter Road area

A report has yet to be submitted to Council. Residents will be able to comment on the proposals once the statutory orders are in place.

Controls could be operating by 2010 depending on the consultation process.
