Space Age

11 October 2008–3 January 2009

Space Age: Exploration, Design and Popular Culture shows just how space has become part of our lives through popular culture, literature, film, design and merchandising.

Curated by the V&A’s Museum of Childhood, the exhibition explores how human fascination with space has developed, from the emergence of astronomy in around 2000BC to NASA’s most ambitious future plans to put humans on Mars.

With more than 300 intriguing objects on display, there promises to be something for every space enthusiast – from children making their own ‘first small steps’ to the generation who witnessed Neil Armstrong taking his on the lunar surface in 1969.

Quick on the Draw

11 October 2008–3 January 2009

Designed to appeal to all age groups, Quick on the Draw shows how people in many walks of life use drawing as an essential part of their life or work.

The ‘Great Wall of Drawing’ shows an astonishing range of activities.

Case studies also show how drawing can help recreate the appearance of extinct species, sequence a fireworks display, develop a computer game, design a guitar or visualise how the new City Palace Tower will look in the heart of Moscow.

The exhibition comes complete with a hands-on activity studio so it’s perfect for school groups and families, including a special area for kids aged three to six years of age.

Treasured Places

25 October 2008 –17 January 2009

This winter, the City Art Centre celebrates the nation’s favourite buildings in Treasured Places, the centenary exhibition of the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historic Monuments of Scotland (RCAHMS).

For the last 100 years RCAHMS has been surveying, recording and collecting items on our built environment. The exhibition provides a fascinating picture of human influence on the ever-changing landscape.

The exhibition explores the evolving work of RCAHMS from conception to the present day. It showcases, for the first time, original items from its extensive archive collection including drawings, paintings and photographs.

The images in Treasured Places represent places and spaces that are ‘treasured’ for many reasons, both personal and national.
