Jubilee joy!
Christmas in Craigmillar will be a real £100,000 adventure with a high-flying new play area.
The Jubilee Play Park is the first new play park created in Craigmillar for many years and will become part of the attractions of Craigmillar Castle Country Park.
The large netclimbing structure with slides is the biggest in Scotland (and maybe even the UK) and is designed for children and young people aged eight and over.
Jubilee – designed by the Council’s play designers – is just five minutes’ walk from housing at Craigmillar Castle Avenue.
Its green design reduces the impact on the environment by using a grass mound instead of a fence. Colours within the design blend the structure into the woodland setting.
The structures tower up into the trees with high level walkways, nets, hammocks, swing ropes and slides…all adding to the wow factor for children!
Festive Castlebrae High pupils Stephanie Purves and Tarige Hassan were delighted to officially open the park on behalf of the school’s eco committee, who have been calling for better play facilities in Craigmillar.
The all-day launch – on 14 November – was organised with Castleview Primary School and Huntershall Housing Co-op. Seventy children from the school sang ‘Craigmillar Now’, a local song written by Douglas Galbraith for the Festival Society in the 70s celebrating Craigmillar as a ‘fine place to be.’
The Council’s Play Action Team organised ‘Play in the Park’ activities and there were free refreshments for children. Castlebrae High School students – volunteer sports leaders for Castleview Primary – helped out with sporting activities.
All in all – a great community start to Christmas!
