We spent an afternoon at the South Neighbourhood Office finding out what services you use, what you think of the customer service, what could be improved and what you think the big issues are in the community.

Brenda Cowie, Gilmerton Dykes Crescent

Brenda was in the office paying her Council Tax, and finds it “very useful” as it is close to home and she doesn’t have to travel far.

Her main issue in the area is getting more things for the kids to do.

“For example, there’s a field near me that’s just empty and could be used for after-school programmes,” she suggested.

Peter Schwarz, Kirk Brae

Peter, who was previously on the Liberton Community Council, was in the office dropping off some papers on behalf of an organisation looking for community funding.

He doesn’t use the office a lot but added: “When I’ve been in, the staff have been very helpful.”

On the area as a whole, he said: “It’s easy to pick holes. For example, say, fix the roads – if you have the money! But I think the Council is doing a good job.”

Marion Greens, St Katherine’s Crescent

Marion uses the office for lots of things – to look for jobs, bid for a house or request repairs. “I have a support worker,” she says, “and it’s quite good.”

She can think of quite a few things that could be improved in the area. “Some roads and footpaths are terrible, and too many young ones are running around late at night.”

Janette McLeod, Southouse Walk

Janette was in the office with a housing enquiry and finds the service “very good”. She broke an ankle last year crossing the road over some utility works though, and feels the “pavements and roads must be sorted”.
