Great Scot… library team win the double

In just four days, Sighthill Library staff picked up two major awards.

The team won the Sunday Mail ‘Great Scot’ Morrisons Community Champions Award 2007 at a star-studded gala awards dinner.

The team, who rubbed shoulders during the evening with Sir Alex Ferguson, Liz McColgan, Alex McLeish, First Minister Alex Salmond and stars of Scottish stage and screen, won for their innovative approach to delivering public library services in Sighthill.

They worked hard to involve local young people in developing services such as the ‘Footballers’ Wives Glamorous Reading Initiative’ and the ‘Gie’s a Job Club’. Their approach resulted in an increase in visitors and a decrease in antisocial behaviour in the library and the surrounding area.

Further success came four days later in Newcastle at the APSE Annual Seminar 2007, where Sighthill Library Team was overwhelmed to win in their category – Best Service Team: sports, leisure and cultural.

Jane Milne, team leader at Sighthill Library, said: “We were amazed and humbled to win both of these awards.”
