Protecting adults at risk

Most people with mental illness, physical or learning disabilities, or other care needs live their lives comfortably and securely, either independently or with assistance.

However, for a small number of people, dependence on someone may put them at risk of harm and produce conflict, exploitation, abuse or neglect.

Under the terms of the new Adult Protection Act, the Council, the NHS and other organisations have a duty to report it if they think an adult is at risk. You can help, too...

What to do?

Harm or abuse can happen in different ways. It may include physical, sexual, psychological or financial abuse, discrimination, neglect, or any other kind of unlawful conduct, such as theft or withholding information about rights and entitlements.

If you think that you – or a person you know – are being abused, contact Social Care Direct, NHS 24 or the police. Alternatively, the Emergency Social Work Service can be contacted outside of office hours.

Social Care Direct – 0131 200 2324

Family CC (Police) – 0131 311 3131

NHS 24 – 08454 242 424

Emergency Social Work Service – 0800 731 6969. Or, in an emergency, call 999.
