Bin Those Butts!
Smokers urged to use ‘cyber-bins’ to keep the city clean.
NEARLY 50 new state-of-the-art ‘cyber-bins’ are expected to pop up all over the city centre in April as part of a planned trial.
The extra space age bins – for chewing gum and cigarette ends – are being placed in areas that have had a recent clean up to see if they make a difference in helping keep the area in tip top condition.
Areas that have recently received an appearance ‘makeover’ include Waverley Bridge, Forrest Road and Bristo Place, as well as the stretch outside the Balmoral Hotel. These areas were identified as problem spots for chewing gum and litter.
Residents, businesses and tourists alike are being called to action to work with the Council to make the city centre as well cared for as possible.
Businesses are being asked to be careful about presenting their trade waste and to tidy up any spillages or mess around their premises. Tourists and city centre users are being targeted to stop dropping litter. Residents are being asked to report dirty or unsightly ‘hot spots’ to the Council so the Environmental Wardens can take action.
Stephen Driscoll, community safety manager, said: “We will have no qualms in dishing out £50 fixed penalty notices to anybody seen dropping any kind of litter, including cigarette ends.”
