Success in making our streets cleaner
In the City Centre Neighbourhood, 89 per cent of the streets are clean, as measured in the latest CIMS (Cleanliness Index Monitoring Survey) in December 2008.
More money has been allocated to provide a night time dedicated street cleaning team. It is expected that this will reduce the fast food wrappers and drinks bottles still on the pavements in the morning.
It is a constant struggle to get people who go out at night in the city centre not to drop litter but we must continue to try to change behaviour.
The team has also arranged to buy two new street vacuum cleaning units to help remove cigarette ends from pavements and other areas. A full time dedicated officer has been working to encourage local businesses, residents and community groups to get involved and help us sort out longstanding waste issues in the area. They will be concentrating on the collection and handling of domestic waste, control of commercial trade waste and cigarette litter.
We need the public’s help to make it to 100 per cent.
Please bin all your rubbish, even the cigarette ends – they count, too! If you spot something in your neighbourhood which needs to be fixed, please let the City Centre team know, either on 0131 529 7061, or by e-mail at centralteam@ edinburgh.gov.uk
In April 2009, we are supporting National Spring Clean, so if you want to help, please register with Keep Scotland Beautiful first and we will provide all the local support.
