The Place to Live

Each year the Council asks residents for their views on their neighbourhood – what do you think are the best things, what needs to be improved and what do you think about the services we provide?

In September and October last year, 393 residents of Craigentinny/ Duddingston and 395 residents of Portobello/Craigmillar took part in this survey:

  • four out of five were satisfied with their neighbourhood as a place to live (80 per cent)
  • three out of five were satisfied with the way the Council manages their neighbourhood (60 per cent)
  • more than one third felt they were able to influence decisions that affected their neighbourhood (38 per cent)
  • more than two thirds felt their neighbourhood was a place where people from different backgrounds could get together (68 per cent).

Residents were asked to rate the performance of 27 services and issues managed by the Council in their neighbourhood.

The biggest changes in the way people viewed services were:

  • satisfaction with road maintenance in Portobello/Craigmillar increased hugely – up from 43 per cent in 2007 to 70 per cent in 2008
  • satisfaction with social and leisure facilities went down the most – from 61 to 47 per cent.

These residents said the following things were best about the areas

or should be a priority for improving the areas.
