A step into the past
Step back in time and discover a city full of history and intrigue this summer.
Edinburgh’s many museums in the heart of the historic Old Town make for a fantastic day out for all the family and, what’s more, they’re free!
Make a day of it to explore the mysterious closes and wynds that criss-cross the Royal Mile. Along the way you’ll find:
The Museum of Childhood:
A favourite with adults and children, the museum is packed full of treasure including dolls, teddies, trains and tricycles from the past.
People’s Story:
Filled with sounds and sights of the past – a prison cell, fishwife, 1940s kitchen, wash-house, dressmaker and much more!
Museum of Edinburgh:
Exhibits feature everything from the national covenant dated 1638 to the feeding bowl and collar of the loveable Greyfriar’s Bobby. A new learning and access room has been created, allowing children to explore Edinburgh’s rich history in a fun and interactive way.
The Writers’ Museum:
Dedicated to the lives and work of Scotland’s great literary figures. Get up close and personal with the likes of Rabbie Burns and Robert Louis Stevenson and investigate a rich collection of manuscripts, first editions and much more!
Brass Rubbing Centre:
Take home your own piece of medieval history including knights, Pictish symbols and Celtic designs. No previous experience needed. Admission is free but the cost to make a rubbing varies.
