Raising awareness to keep safe
The Council has teamed up with Lothian and Borders Police and NHS Lothian to launch Scotland’s first ever adult protection awareness campaign.
We’re asking everyone to be more aware of adults who may be at risk. Concerned individuals are encouraged to contact one of the support agencies involved so that the person in question can be protected from harm.
“Abuse can happen in different ways,” said mental health officer Nick Clater. “It can be physical or psychological harm, neglect, theft or intimidation, or behaviour leading to self harm. This campaign is asking for anyone who is worried about someone who they think is at risk of harm to get in touch, even if it is something they recall from the past.”
The Adult Support and Protection (Scotland) Act 2007 came into force in October 2008. Its purpose is to provide support and protection to people with disability and illness where these can affect a person’s capacity to protect themselves.
Staff have been receiving training in the new adult protection procedures.
Once a concern is reported, staff from the Council’s Health and Social Care department, together with police and NHS Lothian, will form a plan to assist the adult. They will work with them and their family and carers, taking into account their wishes when deciding what to do.
