Open for business
Portobello High Street is now open and traffic is moving well. And trips there should be even easier with the completion of road works at the new Seafield Road junction.
The traffic light operated junction will make for a far safer and more convenient route for everyone travelling to and from the area. In particular, those travelling by bus will benefit from consistently reduced journey times.
The improvements help meet the ongoing challenge of reducing the number and severity of road accidents, particularly those involving cyclists.
Pedestrian crossings
Signalised crossing points have been added over all five intercepting roads at the junction, constructed on or close to sections identified as preferred pedestrian routes. On Portobello High Street a replacement crossing has been added, making access to businesses easier.
Facilities for cyclists
The new design incorporates cycle lanes on the approach to the junction on King’s Road, Portobello Road and Portobello High Street and includes cycle “reservoirs” at the stop lines. The advanced stop lines allow cyclists a head start when the traffic signal changes to green. Straight-on cyclists can adopt and maintain a prominent position for crossing the junction safely, or can take up a proper turning position.
Benefits to buses
Bus lanes have been added to the approaches on Portobello Road and Portobello High Street in both directions, allowing for improved bus services with reduced journey times.
So head down to Portobello and relax in the summer time vibe of Edinburgh’s historic beach holiday destination. It’s bursting with locally owned cafés, bistros, shops and entertainment to suit all tastes!
