Fiery summer
Beltane fire festival marked the start of Edinburgh’s summer season of events with its annual parade on Calton Hill
Gaelic for “bright fire”, Beltane has been an important event in the Celtic calendar for thousands of years, marking the return of summer, light and fertility.
A fire procession, a May Queen and a Green Man representing fertility and renewal led the celebrations on the hillside.
The annual event, organised by the Beltane Fire Society, attracts a local and international crowd and the aim is to encourage the community and the wider world to continue to celebrate these traditional events.
