Catch the Buz
The Youth Buz Project delivers a drop-in youth programme in the heart of the community of east Edinburgh.
Using a bright yellow converted single-decker bus as a mobile youth club, the project works with young people aged from 12 to 18.
With computer work stations, satellite internet access, a giant plasma screen, PlayStations and a cushioned ‘chill-out’ zone, the Buz is the perfect place to hang out. There is even a sound system with DJ decks.
Since its launch in January 2005, the Buz has proved incredibly popular and attracts an average of 80 young people each week.
As well as having fun on the bus, young people are learning social skills and get a chance to reflect on their actions. Youth workers with different skills run the project as a drop-in centre.
As part of the programme there are alcohol awareness evenings, health initiatives which can include smoothie making, and sexual health workshops.
A mobile sports pitch is the latest development of the project, under the name ‘Street football for all’, and was inspired by Columbia’s ‘Street Football for Peace’.
Street football is about participation, decision-making and compromise.
The aim is also to promote health, encourage equality between males and females, develop interpersonal skills and promote safety.
The Buz runs four nights a week – two nights a week at Northfield Willowbrae, and two nights a week at Restalrig/Lochend.
