Youngsters make a design for life

Moredun and Morningside Libraries recently provided innovative wording and printing workshops, aimed at young people.

On Wednesday evenings and Saturday mornings, artist Stephanie Walker was on hand to help participants work on an art project that incorporates printing and wording, based on aspects of their lives.

The 12-week project is part of the South youth development project which aims to provide more activities for young people living in Liberton/Gilmerton and South Central.

A panel involving key agencies met to discuss the proposals and the printing workshops were established through matrix funding.

Young people from each area were encouraged to participate through local youth workers, Neighbourhoud Action Unit and neighbourhood concierge.

It is clear that more activities are needed when young people need them most. Similarly, evidence has suggested in the past that the provision of activities during school holidays reduces the numbers of young people involved in negative activity within their communities.

“We estimated a total of 200 young people turned up for these workshops,” said Vanessa Chalmers, library officer. “It’s a fun chance for them to work with artists to create their own prints and designs.”
