Poems for peace
The winners of the Nelson Mandela Poetry competition were announced at a special awards ceremony at Gracemount High School.
Youngsters across Edinburgh entered the competition, held as part of Nelson Mandela’s 90th birthday celebrations.
More than 400 poems were submitted in four categories – peace, compassion, freedom and reconciliation.
The winning poems were recited at a reception at Gracemount High School, where the winners were also awarded with book tokens.
The competition was organised as part of the ‘Network Africa’ events which bring together schools from across the city which have links with Africa.
The winners:
Peace: Lucy Hogg, Lorne Primary (P6/7)
- Compassion: Eithne Fitzgerald, James Gillespie’s High (S1/2)
- Freedom: Jack Dorward, James Gillespie’s High (S3/4)
- Reconciliation: Farooq Javed, Craigmount High (S5/6)
