Consultation on high flats hits the streets

THE Council is kick-starting an exciting programme of house building in three areas across the city.

Sites in Gracemount, North Sighthill and Pennywell are all to be redeveloped over the next eight years.

Three tower blocks on Gracemount Drive, Fala, Garvald and Soutra Courts are programmed to be taken down at the end of this year. The site will then be redeveloped to deliver about 220 homes for sale and rent.

It is expected that half of the new homes will be affordable, with the other half for market sale.

Over the past two months members of staff within Services for Communities have been on the streets of Gracemount carrying out extensive consultation.

These consultations at Scotmid, Gracemount Medical Centre and Leisure Centre, South Edinburgh Neighbourhood Office and Gilmerton Library were designed to give people the chance to give their opinions on draft proposals.

It is envisaged that by mid October there will be a public exhibition of the approved masterplan, with redevelopment starting next spring.

Your views on Gracemount

On 30 April, we asked shoppers at Morrison’s supermarket what they thought about the Gracemount proposals…

Vicky Lanch, Ferniehill

“I like the open spaces and it’s good that the new houses will not be so built up. I think it’s more important to have green space the public can enjoy and a range of different types of housing.”

Kelly Air, Moredun Parkview

“I’m in favour of the high rises coming down. They should all be council houses really, if it’s council flats that are coming down.

“I’d prefer to have a private garden.”

Irene McCann, Burnhead

“I like shared space for all the kids to play in.”
