Wheels of change
Offenders are ‘getting on their bikes’ to learn new skills and steer away from trouble.
Set in Motion is described as a ‘restorative justice programme’ through which participants can both increase their self esteem and find options to change their offending behaviour.
The project is funded by Youth Matrix in partnership with Lothian & Borders Police, Prospect Community Housing and South West Services for Communities (SfC) Community Safety Team.
Along with learning positive behaviour, they learn basic cycle maintenance skills – such as how to repair a puncture, brakes and gears – as well as safe cycle skills, safe routes and highway codes.
The project has shown to successfully prevent individuals from offending within local communities using cognitive behavioural intervention methods, through which the participants understand and address their difficulties.
At the end of the project, each participant’s bike will be checked by a qualified cycle mechanic.
During the final practical cycle skills session, participants will be assessed on their ability to ride safely and responsibly in the community.
