School goes global
St Augustine’s held its second annual Unity and Diversity Week in March, to celebrate the school’s multi-cultural community.
Pupils explored Bollywood and Japanese dancing, Chinese calculus, the art of making curry and the skill of playing bagpipes. They also feasted on a Bangladeshi banquet.
Teachers added a global dimension, with projects and lessons tied in to the week’s events.
Activities across all departments celebrated more than 30 nationalities that are represented within the school. St Augustine’s displayed material from its partner school in Zimbabwe.
Diversity Week gives everybody in the school community the chance to celebrate the harmonious international population which has developed within St Augustine’s.
Head teacher Terry McNamee said: “This week allows us to publicly honour the school’s values and aims; to be both inclusive and faith-led, and also to personalise the formal outcomes demanded by the Curriculum for Excellence. We want our young people to take these values into the wider community, and the week’s events were underpinned with the message, ‘With respect for each other, we can make a difference.’”
