The buses are back!

Princes Street reopens to traffic

Buses, taxis and bicycles will be back on Princes Street in time for Christmas as tram track laying reaches its conclusion along the main thoroughfare.

The famous street will be opened back up to public transport and bikes from 5am on Sunday 29 November as part of the opening weekend of Edinburgh’s Christmas celebrations.

Since February, the diversion routes onto George Street have worked very well with minimal delays to traffic. Retailers on both streets, however, have been keen to see a return to the original arrangements.

At the time of going to press, final traffic management arrangements were being put in place but it is expected the street will reopen, on schedule, on 29 November. Information on where to catch your bus on Princes Street will be handed out on the street throughout November and will also be available on buses and in travelshops.

Taxi ranks, disabled parking and pay and display bays, removed to cope with the increased volume of buses on George Street, are also being reinstated.

So, if you’re planning to travel to Princes Street for some Christmas shopping this year, the solution is simple – just hop on the bus!
