A healthy start to the school day
Free breakfast for capital kids
Edinburgh’s AEGON Breakfast Club scheme is continuing to help children understand the importance of a healthy start to their day – by offering a free breakfast to primary school children in the capital.
Now in its third year, the scheme has five breakfast clubs operating within the city. In May, Ratho Primary became the latest school to take part in the club, following Edinburgh Airport’s announcement to fund the school.
As well as offering children free access to a healthy and nutritious meal at the start of the day, staff working at the clubs provide kids with emotional support and help with their homework. The clubs have been particularly successful in making a difference to the lives of vulnerable children – some teachers have noticed a marked improvement in the attendance and punctuality of pupils who now take part.
The Breakfast Club is a three-way partnership between the Heart of Midlothian Education and Community Trust, the Council and leading life and pensions company AEGON.
