Ready to roll!
First of Edinburgh's new trams has been built
Edinburgh’s first state-of-the-art tram rolled off the production line in September.
Our trams will be the best in their class. At more than 40 metres long and 2.65m wide, our trams will also be the biggest in the UK.
Fully accessible, with many energy-saving features, the Edinburgh trams have a special braking system that minimises energy consumption.
Each tram will carry up to 250 passengers at a time, with 78 seats as well as two wheelchair spaces and seating for those who have other impairments.
There is also additional priority seating in each carriage for others who may require it.
The trams provide large spaces for passengers and with 100 per cent low-level boarding. Wide aisles make them ideal for prams, buggies and wheelchairs.
There are also spacious luggage racks for those with bulky items.
The interiors have been designed in consultation with a wide range of disability groups to ensure they not only meet legislative requirements, but also provide additional features to help people with different impairments and disabilities.
There is even specific space under one of the easy-access seats for an assistance dog to sit safely!
The 27-strong fleet will have a timeless and attractive appearance, complementing the city’s heritage, yet reflecting its modern image.
The first of the completed trams is currently undergoing factory testing and due to be delivered to Edinburgh next spring.
On-street, the trams can travel up to 30mph, reaching a maximum of 50mph off-street.
Screens will provide travel updates and additional information about the route. Inspectors will be present on all trams at all times to check tickets, answer passenger queries and provide assistance.
Fares will be fully integrated on both Lothian Buses and trams with the existing Ridacard and day tickets valid on both.
The only exception will be a premium fare for travelling to the airport, which will follow the same pricing structure as the current Airlink services.
