Have fun, stay safe
Winter wonderland patrols will ensure a good time for all
Having a good time while staying safe in the city centre over Christmas is the message of the Winter Wonderland initiative.
Community safety officers, Environmental Wardens and the CCTV team work with outside agencies including the Police to protect youngsters around the Winter Wonderland.
From the end of November, joint patrols are stepped up and there will be a presence in the area until late in the evening.
“It’s the third year we’ve been carrying out this initiative, and crime statistics for the same period have seen a reduction,” said community safety manager Steve Driscoll.
“In 2007 we did have incidents with youths and alcohol and unacceptable behaviour, but last year the message seemed to get through.
“We have links with the rail network and their CCTV so we know who’s coming in and if we hear of any potential trouble, we’re well informed.
“What I would say to young people is, if you want to come in to the city centre, keep the booze out of it.
“They will be stopped by the Police – we adopt a zero-tolerance approach.
“Watch your personal items and make sure you keep young kids in sight,” added Steve.
“We want to make sure people have a good time while staying safe.”
