Butt out
5,000 mini-bins help wage war on littering
Now there’s an easy way to bin cigarette butts and chewing gum and avoid that £50 fine.
The City Centre Neighbourhood team has launched ‘mini-bins’ – small reusable portable pouches where you can put your butts and gum and then dispose of them later.
Already 5,000 mini-bins have been handed out to city centre bars and nightclubs and it is hoped they will make a real difference to the cleanliness of our streets.
“We particularly want to get the message out to people having a smoke outside bars,” said Environmental Warden team leader Chris Smith. “They drop their cigarettes and the next day they are littering the ground.
“There’s a triple message with the mini-bins. Not only to prevent people littering, but we have the Smokeline number printed on them and we want licensed premises to also look after their area.”
You can pick up a mini-bin from the City Centre Neighbourhood Office at 1 Cockburn Street or from local licensed premises.
