The riders return

Riding of the Marches returns after 63 years

After a 63-year absence, the Edinburgh Riding of the Marches returned to the Capital in September, as part of the Year of Homecoming. Two hundred and fifty horses and riders made their way from Tower Farm stables in the Braid Hills into the city and up to the Mercat Cross.

The Riding of the Marches was originally held between 1579 and 1718 to protect the city boundaries. In 1946 there was a one-off Riding of the Marches in Edinburgh to celebrate the end of the war, but it has not been repeated since.
