Giant inflatable to be the next Big Thing
Temporary sculpture will capture the spirit of Portobello
Big Things on the Beach, the voluntary arts trust which commissions public artworks in Portobello, has a new artist coming to town with ideas for a giant inflatable sculpture.
Simon Grennan, of international artist team Grennan & Sperandio, will be working with local people to help them to create a temporary sculpture that captures the spirit of Portobello.
“We’re very excited to be working in Portobello. The area has such a varied history and strong character – not to mention the fantastic beach and promenade,” said Simon. “We’re also really looking forward to meeting more Portobello people as the artwork develops, and to building on the great artworks already created through Big Things on the Beach.”
Since 1995, the duo has developed comic book, animation and community projects in conjunction with museums and broadcast, web and publishing companies in New York, Boston, London and Gateshead.
Big Things on the Beach has been commissioning temporary public artworks at the sea front since 2004. This is one of three new commissions that will take place in Portobello in 2010 as part of the ‘Imagine Porty Prom’ project, which aims to involve the community of Portobello in developing a long-term Public Art Plan for the area.
