Friend to the neighbourhood's teenagers

Susan is a real support to young people

Youth Project Worker Susan Law is a well-known face around Craigmillar. Her dedication to youth and community groups means that she is seen as a friend to the neighbourhood’s teenagers. She was applauded for her work as a runner-up in the Council’s Staff Awards.

“People do come up to me in the street. It’s such a small community and maybe someone’s mum or a young person will ask me a question or look for some advice.”

She added: “I find it really easy working with young people. I speak to them as adults and tell it as it is, so I’ve built up trust over time.”

As well as being involved with Oot N Aboot, she also works with young people on their own. “They might need help with housing, a reference for a job application, help with a CV or emotional help through a difficult time.”

She also goes to every primary 6 class in greater Craigmillar with Early Interventions, an initiative that has been applauded as best practice.

“Early Interventions is an eight-week programme on topics such as their rights and responsibilities, stereotypes and bullying. It’s really quite well received,” said Susan.

One success is that young people are now coming in to the East Neighbourhood Office and feel they can ask the staff for help.

“I’m proud of all my young people,” said Susan. “I’m most happy when they are successful in getting a job – but anything they have achieved is a success story.”
