New life for tennis court

Ravelston Park to become multi-use games space after teenagers' campaign

A group of local teenagers has successfully campaigned for a disused and potholed tennis court in Ravelston Park to be refurbished as a multi-use games court.

Young people approached the Craigleith/Blackhall community council nearly two years ago to ask for new facilities that they could use.

Earlier this year they got their wish when the Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust was awarded £100,000 funding from WREN (Waste Recycling Environmental) to create opportunities for outdoor activities for young people.

The project has been a great team effort by many different groups, with funding and support in particular from WREN, the Blackhall Children’s Sports Committee, the Council’s Inverleith Neighbourhood Partnership and Services for Communities, and the Edinburgh and Lothians Greenspace Trust.

Mike Snell, general manager of external affairs at Waste Recycling Group, said: “We and our friends at WREN are committed to supporting projects that have a real impact on communities and we’re delighted that this funding award has benefited the young people living around Ravelston Park.

“Play facilities are such an important part of building community spirit and can really help families build connections and friendships in their neighbourhood.”
