Bike Stop brings cycling safety message to Roseburn Park

Roseburn Park was host to a Bike Stop on 26 October to raise awareness of the issues of cycling safely.

Duncan Monteith, senior countryside ranger, handed out leaflets and free wrist bands to highlight the Bike Polite code. Bike Station’s Ruairidh MacGlone offered free bike servicing as part of the charity’s Dr Bike initiative.

Everyone now has a duty to cycle responsibly in Edinburgh’s public parks, following new advice from the Scottish Government.

Roseburn was chosen for the Bike Stop because of the number of cyclists and children walking through the park. “There have been incidents where cyclists have been going too fast as they pass children,” said Duncan. “Cyclists have to cycle responsibly by keeping the speed down, sticking to footpaths and not cycling too fast around pedestrians.”

One passer-by who stopped at Bike Stop was also concerned about safety in Roseburn Park. “The cyclists race past and, if one of the kids took a sudden step, they could easily be killed,” he said.
