'Novel' way to work with kids

Metaphrog comics duo hold workshop

Glasgow-based comic duo Metaphrog visited Kirkliston Library to host a graphic novel workshop for kids.

John Chalmers and Sandra Marrs are best known for their critically acclaimed Louis series, and they were commissioned to adapt Edwin Morgan’s poem The First Men on Mercury into a graphic novel for National Poetry Day on 8 October.

They regularly visit libraries and schools to deliver workshops and events for young people and adults, demonstrating the creative process involved in making graphic novels.

“It’s a great way for kids to communicate and express themselves. It also encourages literacy and communication in a more approachable way,” said John.

“Graphic novels are really a modern term for comics. It doesn’t need to be fantastic and they shouldn’t be inhibited if they don’t think they can draw.”

Some of the kids who took part were Seona Lee, Bethan Rees and Caitlin Rees (all 10 years old).

“I really liked it,” said Seona. “All three of us are going to make a comic when we get back home.”
