A spring clean for the city

Nine new refuse vehicles lead the way to spring clean our city

Reduce, reuse, recycle

Spring is on its way … and it’s time to turn our thoughts to spring-cleaning our homes and our city!

If you plan a household clearout or de-clutter, then make sure you either donate usable items to a charity shop or take them to one of our recycling centres.

Recycling is one of the Council’s top priorities and we’re launching a year-round campaign to increase recycling rates across the city.

The project will start with the launch of nine new refuse collection vehicles with recycling messages showing the two sides of our city – Edenburgh and EdinbURGH.

The Edenburgh campaign will raise awareness of the need to protect our beautiful environment by recycling more and asks Edinburgh residents to decide whether they contribute to a clean, green and safe Edenburgh or dirty, littered, wasteful EdinbURGH.

Choosing Edenburgh means taking more responsibility for what goes into your bin and recycling as much as possible.

It’s so easy to be green. Our Community Recycling Centres have easy-to-use layouts and staff are on hand to help you recycle as much as you can.

There are literally dozens of items which can be recycled there (see panel).

You can also donate working household items at the reuse cabins at each site. These are given to charities to pass on to local people in need.

You can recycle…

  • TVs, computer monitors and electrical equipment
  • paper and cardboard
  • books and CDs
  • clothing and shoes
  • fluorescent tubes and low-energy light bulbs
  • solid and low-grade wood, metal
  • engine oil, car batteries and tyres
  • garden waste
  • glass bottles and jars
  • household batteries
  • gas bottles
  • bricks and rubble
  • fridges and freezers.

From 1 April we can also recycle water-based paint including paints, varnishes and wood stains.
