Key findings of audit
The Council is planning a co-ordinated approach to protect and meet the future needs of Edinburgh’s network of open spaces.
An audit of the spaces and public consultations – to let people give their views on the quality and use of them – was carried out last year.
The consultation process took place at 40 local events and questionnaire surveys were also used.
Key findings include:
- 82 per cent use their local green space at least once a week
- 46 per cent walked for less than five minutes to their local green space
- 68 per cent walk to the play areas they use
- 13 per cent get to a play area by car average walking distance to an equipped play area is 750m
- 72 per cent think the play areas they use are good.
The draft strategy estimates the needs for certain types of open space and proposes sites which could address those needs. It is accompanied by 12 action plans, one for each Neighbourhood Partnership area.
The strategy and action plans are open for consultation from late March to May 2010.
